I quit my job last month. I just couldn’t take it anymore. The pressure at work was becoming unbearable. All they ever cared about were numbers. We were in the Human Resource business and all they cared about was numbers. You see, I worked with a headhunting agency. We helped our clients find the right kind of people from the industry for the open positions in their organization. This kind of business requires you to build strong relationships with both clients and candidates and you can’t do that if all you care about is numbers.

So, I quit and decided to start my own consultancy. I was good at my job and I knew it. I genuinely cared about making the right matches between clients and candidates. I also liked to believe that I was able to help a lot of candidates make the right career choices. And, I made sure that my clients were always happy with my services. I kept them up-to-date with my weekly reports and they really appreciated it. I have faith in my ability to succeed in this business.

I have decided to start with a home office. In my line of work, most of your day-to-day work in done on telephones and computers. You mostly meet clients in their own offices, and if and when you need to meet a candidate, you can always arrange to meet at a coffee shop.
But, that works only in the short term. If my consultancy grows at the rate I expect it to grow, very soon, I will be too busy to drop everything to go meet a candidate. It would be far more convenient to meet them in my office. Secondly, if all goes well, I may even need to hire an assistant within the first year of operations and I need to have some infrastructure in place for that eventuality. Thirdly, I like to work in a work-like atmosphere. If I were to attempt to work while lounging on the couch, I doubt if I could get very much accomplished.

I would prefer to get the setting up of the office out of the way so that it doesn’t have to interrupt my work at a later stage. Michael has said he will be coming to New York this fall. He is taking up a job in the city and he asked me very politely if he could come and stay with me. I agreed immediately. This is very exciting indeed. Just like in the books, we have been left an inheritance by an old long forgotten uncle. Apparently he was rich, but didn’t have too many close relations. And so he decided to benefit all his relatives however distant they were to him. I think because he moved to England in his early life, he adapted some of their traditions.

I don’t know how much money there is to give away, but I do know that there is a lot of good quality New York traditional furniture and some paintings and some antiques. There is no way to know what they are each worth, but considering that the uncle was a rich man during his time, it seems unlikely that his possessions would be cheap.

We don’t even know how many people his estate is being divided amongst and if any proceeds are kept aside for charity. I personally would love some New York traditional furniture, but presumable, the paintings and the antique would be of much greater value. I don’t know much about the world of antiques and paintings to know too much about their value and worth. I can however, always appreciate the quality and elegance of good furniture.

Dividing the room into different use areas is a great way to break up the space. Obviously a fireplace is a great focal point.
